LEARNING HOW TO BE UNITED

While our nation experiences painful conflict and deep division, the issues we face are not new. Jesus will show us how to be truly one, if we will let Him.

Sermon Series: “That They May Be One”

  • That They May Be One (John 17:20-26)
Our world is so painfully divided.  Jesus not only wants His followers to be united, but He shows us how to achieve it.

  • Be Our Guest (Acts 10:19-48)
When our world is so deeply divided by the pandemic, injustice, and more, how can we be united? Jesus leads us to true unity when we move past our hesitations, simply spend time together, and focus on Him.

  • Out of Step (Galatians 2:11-14)
Despite our best intentions, sometimes we get out-of-step with the gospel, causing pain and division.  Yet, the great thing about the gospel is that we can change.

  • No Small Dissension (Acts 15:1-18)
Wherever there are people, there will be conflict. Yet, if we learn from Jesus when to gather, what to say, and how to listen, He will show us the way forward.

  • Coming to One Accord (Acts 15:19-35)
Conflict is inevitable. Yet, when we are focused on Jesus and considerate toward each other, we can come together as one.

  • Building Bridges (II Corinthians 5:14-21)
As Christians, we are called to be ministers of reconciliation and ambassadors for Jesus. This means every day we are Building Relationships and Intentionally Doing Good to Everyone. Presented by guest speaker and church elder John Harrison.

“God has a plan for you,” but it is much bigger than our personal goals or even our individual salvation. In a painfully divided world, His plan is to unite all things in Jesus.

  • How Do We Heal Our Divisions? Preach Jesus.
What is the church to do in a world so divided? We preach Jesus, knowing that while Satan baits us with deception or blame, Christ shed His blood so that all might be brought near. We preach Jesus, because rather than being a substitute for science or an excuse to ignore social justice, the gospel brings us near to God AND to each other.

Expertise is valuable as we deal with difficult issues, but too often we only look for experts that prove our points. If we are to heal our deep divisions, we must learn from Jesus discernment that listens and expertise that is humble.

  • How Do We Heal Our Divisions? We Work for It.
Everyone wants peace and unity, but they don’t just happen: we must eagerly work for them. This isn’t easy, especially in a world that tempts us to fight its callousness with our own half-truths, anger, or abusive language. Yet when we put our focus on Jesus, the growth He gives is worth the effort.

  • How Do We Heal Our Divisions? Love like God.
No one likes the way things are, but most of us feel helpless to do anything. Yet, a proven way to heal our divisions does exist: the way of Christ, a way that never stopped working but that we stopped trying. If nothing else changed, you could: and it would begin to heal our divisions.

  • How Do We Heal Our Divisions? Keep Going.
When history shows the church and even the world healing, it has been through Christian leaders working to reunite people long after the immediate conflict has ended. True unity requires us to keep going and bring people together.
